Sugo Italian Kitchen Replaces Parisi's on Crown Point Square

If you have walked past 115 W Joliet Street any time since spring, you have watched the construction fencing come down piece by piece around what everyone in Crown Point has been calling "Parisi's." The name came from Billy Parisi, the YouTube chef with more than a million subscribers, and the anticipation built the way it does when a recognizable name attaches itself to a small downtown storefront. By early July, before most of the square had caught on, the sign had already changed. The restaurant is now Sugo Italian Kitchen. Parisi stepped away from the project entirely.

What actually changed, and what didn't

Sugo, Italian for sauce, will occupy the same space on the historic Crown Point Square, previously home to Ricochet Tacos, with the same elevated homestyle Italian concept: handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza, a build-your-own pizza option for kids, and a pneumatic cocktail delivery system that sends drinks through tubes between floors. None of that changed. What changed is who is left standing as the sole operator.

Chris Pappas, founder and owner of Meraki Hospitality Group, said in a statement reported by Northwest Indiana Business that the goal was a restaurant special enough for life's biggest moments but comfortable enough for a Tuesday lunch, adding that Sugo is "about hospitality, great food, and creating experiences people remember." Parisi's own explanation, posted to social media, framed his exit as a matter of scale: too many moving parts, too many partners, for a project that was never supposed to be just about him.

Here's the short version of what to expect versus what's gone:

• Still there: the address, the menu concept, the wood-fired pizza and handmade pasta, the tube-delivered cocktails, the kids' build-your-own pizza station
• Gone: the Parisi name, the celebrity-chef partnership structure, the national-personality marketing angle
• New: full ownership under Meraki Hospitality Group, with Pappas as the only name attached to the concept going forward

The original target was an August opening, and August has now come and gone without a confirmed ribbon cutting from any local outlet. Sugo's own website and online ordering page are live under the Joliet Street address, which suggests the kitchen is operating in some capacity even if a formal grand opening hasn't been announced. If you have been checking the door every week expecting a big unveiling, the safer plan right now is to call ahead or check Sugo's own channels rather than circle a date from a press release that's already a couple of months old.

Meraki Hospitality Group's other local businesses

Sugo is not Meraki Hospitality Group's first restaurant on the square. It is not even close to its first.

Pappas already runs Provecho Latin Provisions, Ramen District, and Pappas Restaurant & Bar, all in Crown Point, plus Lighthouse Restaurant in Cedar Lake and a mobile catering operation called Meraki Mobile. He also owns The Grand, the wedding and events venue sitting directly across the street from Sugo's front door.

That's five Crown Point addresses under one operator, on a downtown square small enough to walk end to end in ten minutes. The wedding venue and the newest restaurant sit on opposite sides of the same street. A couple could book The Grand for a reception and Sugo for the rehearsal dinner without ever leaving the block, and both checks would go to the same company.

Sugo's place among those businesses is easiest to see on the block itself.

Where this sits, if you know the block

Sugo's storefront is on the south side of W Joliet Street, close enough to Prime Steakhouse that you could carry a to-go order between them without it going cold. JMOTO Speedshop, the motorcycle shop, sits directly in front. The Grand is across the street. If you have parked on the square for Taste of Crown Point at Bulldog Park or grabbed tacos from that same storefront before it changed hands, you already know exactly where this is.

The square includes the former Ricochet Tacos space, Prime Steakhouse, and Sugo's multi-floor cocktail concept, complete with a tube system to move drinks between levels. Meraki Hospitality Group also caters weddings across the street at The Grand, while several independent businesses operate nearby.

What this means if you already eat downtown regularly

None of this is bad news for anyone who already treats the square as their weeknight rotation. A single operator running five concepts within a few blocks tends to mean consistent hours, shared staff who can cover a busy Friday, and a house style that carries across menus, which is part of why Meraki's other spots, like Ramen District and Provecho, have built regular followings rather than one-off buzz.

Crown Point's square also has independent kitchens. Culinary Misfits runs its own brunch and lounge concept a few doors down. Bedarra Bar, Crown Brewing, and Off Square Brewing operate on their own.

The one thing worth watching

Keep an eye on whether a formal grand opening ever gets announced, or whether Sugo just quietly slides into regular service the way its order page already suggests. For diners, the distinction is whether to plan around an opening event or regular service. Either way, Sugo is one of several businesses on the block between Prime Steakhouse and The Grand, making it another addition to Crown Point's downtown dining scene.
